Say yes to shaped backsplash!

Let’s start with the basics of why a stone backsplash is always a helpful idea; it’s going to offer great wall protection from moisture, splashes, spills, stains, etc. It’s beautiful! It matches your countertop so there’s not yet another component to pick out which can be exhausting when renovating multiple spaces. It’s timeless; they’ve been using stone as protection around water features for millennia, and they’re going to be around for that much longer and then some I’m sure. But aside from all of that, what can we do with a backsplash that takes it from functional, to fabulous?

A great example of a dramatic backsplash being used as a wall treatment. This marble extends all the way to the floor to protect the space from moisture while adding a lovely shaped detail at the top for contrast and intrigue.

This shaped backsplash has a detailed top to match with curved details going around corner posts rather than having the top extend past the posts and continue at that depth all the way around.

Let’s add form! Now form follows function, so you’ll still want to keep enough height to protect your walls from whatever water feature is in the space, but why stop there? Why not swoop up with a graceful bow above your sink or faucet? Or have a delicate arch on your side-splashes around the vanity? Perhaps an ornate series of jogs and dips around some full height backsplash behind a range? Or maybe it’s just adding a detailed edge profile to the backsplash to inspire a second glance at something that is normally taken for pure functionality.

A delicate swoop to end a run of full height backsplash adds a delightful touch to something that is often left as an afterthought.
